Oh nurse, how you've changed: The women who've served the NHS in each decade describe their experience. Updated. 0. 0: 3. BST, 1 July 2. 00. This week the NHS celebrates its 6. Medicine has changed dramatically over the past six decades, but how different is it for those actually caring for patients? Here we asked nurses from each decade to describe what it meant to train and work in their very different eras . She retired in 1. Now aged 8. 1 and a widow with three grandchildren, she says: On my first day I had to report to the nurses' home at 4pm. It was a misty January afternoon and a stern maid answered the door and ushered me in. It was quite intimidating and I thought to myself: 'Will I ever get out?' I was shown to my room and on the bed was my uniform - a blue and white striped dress, stiff white collar, starched white apron and detachable starched white 'sleeves'. There was a starched cotton cap with a pleat to fit at the back. My own flat black shoes and stockings completed the outfit. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking I looked like a real nurse - I felt excited but a bit apprehensive. I'd wanted to work in a hospital for as long as I could remember. In those days you didn't need special qualifications: I had seven school certificates (similar to GCSEs), some girls didn't have any. A lot depended on your interview with Matron. We spent eight weeks in training school studying anatomy, physiology, hygiene and the theory of nursing. I loved it and still have three of my original notebooks. We also learned hospital etiquette: you addressed patients with their title and surname; we had to refer to each other by surname only. It was drilled into us that we were expected to treat people as if they were guests in our home. Then began our training on the wards. Stone Summit Climbing and Fitness Centers . Come Get Your Climb On! My first patient was a man who had rheumatoid arthritis and I had to feed him. I can still picture his face. In the fourth year, we exchanged our caps for frilly net caps which were very becoming. We weren't allowed to wear jewellery or garish make- up. One nurse had very curly hair and was told too much of it was on display and that she looked like a chorus girl, which we all knew was a derogatory comment. We had to live in the nurses' home; if you got married, you had to leave nursing. A home sister would inspect our rooms to make sure we kept them tidy. Lights went out at 1. A bell would wake us in time for breakfast at 7am and morning duty at 7. We worked until 8pm, although we had a three- hour break when we could go back to our rooms or out for coffee and cakes. Night shifts would be 8pm to 8am, with a half- hour break. We had a month's holiday - two weeks in the summer and two in the winter. My starting salary was . We would queue outside Matron's office for our wages and money could be deducted if we'd broken a thermometer. There was a great sense of companionship, which made up for all the restrictions of living in. We had great fun and I made life- long friends. Out of my group of seven trainees, four left. One was allergic to Dettol (in those days that was the only antiseptic), one had scarlet fever, another moved to London and the fourth got married. That left three of us - two moved to New Zealand and I'm still in touch with one. Much has changed about hospital life. We were particular about cleanliness, and, as well as daily duties, every Wednesday we had a thorough clean: moving the beds (1. We hated it, but it had to be done. Patients used to stay in bed ten days after routine operations; today they're out the next day. Also, visiting hours are now flexible. We used to allow just two visitors per bed and only between 3pm and 4pm on Wednesdays and at weekends. The other change is that no one seems to be in charge. My Matron was only 5ft, but everyone was on tenterhooks when she did ward rounds. That kind of presence is now lacking and can't but affect hygiene and patient care. Of course, the medicine has improved. I remember the first time I saw penicillin used in 1. The patient was an American man on holiday, who had endocarditis ( inflammation of the lining of the heart). Unfortunately, he died after treatment. He may have lived if it had happened today. HIlary Howe (left): 'Hygiene was paramount'HILARY HOWE started her training at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford in 1. Now 7. 4, she is single, retired and lives in Stroud, Glos. She says: Most of my training was on the wards, under the guidance of a sister - and they tended to be scary. Hygiene was paramount; we had to scrub up to our elbows for two minutes in between treating each patient. The first time we did it, Sister watched us to make sure we did it right. From time to time students were called in for a lecture given by a ward sister, who would demonstrate techniques on an adult- sized doll, which had little resemblance to a real adult. Sister had a list of tasks you had to perform before you could qualify, and only once she had watched you do each one competently would she tick it off her list. You changed wards every six weeks, so that by the end of the three- year training The days were long - I worked 4. I lived in nurses' accommodation and the cost of that and laundry was taken out of my pay packet. In my first month I earned just . The laundry costs were high because our uniforms had to be spotless. We wore a short- sleeved dress, stiff starched apron, starched hat, black stockings and black laced shoes. We had to wear a cape when we went out. I loved the uniform, but the starched apron took a bit of getting used to. It was an exciting time in medicine. One of the doctors at the Radcliffe had developed an early form of ventilator. Before that, patients with breathing difficulties were put into an iron lung, a chamber in which the pressure would be increased and decreased to mimic breathing. It was cumbersome and you could tend to a patient only via portholes which allowed your arms into the chamber, which was not pleasant for them. Nursing was hard physical work, with lots of hauling patients and beds about. It demanded commitment and anti- social shifts, so most women from my generation who stuck with the job, like me, remained single. It was not until later that nurses who married were allowed to stay in the job. I loved being a nurse. My mother tried to talk me out of it because she thought the profession was lowly, but I miss it to this day. I had to retire when I was 6. I have been a patient since and have noticed a difference in nurses. The training has become far more academic, and the caring that used to be part and parcel of being a nurse has gone. These days nurses are stuck doing administration. Carol Bilney: 'There was a strict hierarchy on the ward'CAROL BILNEY started training at the Royal Free Hospital in North London in 1. Now 6. 6, she is retired and lives with her husband Alec, 6. Kingston, Surrey. They have two grownup- children. She says: When I started nursing, the profession was held in such high regard that on my way home from work, dressed in my regulation gabardine coat and hat, people would offer me their seat on the Tube. Trying to get into a London hospital as a student nurse was really difficult. It was competitive and you needed A- levels. Nursing seemed the right thing to do. My dad had been a builder and often cut himself at work and I would always enjoy bandaging up his finger when he got home. We did three months in the classroom before we were allowed on to the wards. Over the next three years, we did a cycle of practical training on the ward for three months and a month's teaching. There was a strict hierarchy on the ward. No nurse would dare talk to a consultant unless they spoke to you first. Junior doctors were far more friendly. As students we had to live in the nurses' home and would be locked in at 1. It sounds odd now, but we didn't question it. It was a real community and we all became great friends, still keeping in touch 4. The pay wasn't amazing - we received . Some girls struggled to survive and took moonlighting jobs as cleaners. There was a big emphasis on cleaning in the Sixties. After changing all the beds, we would wet- dust the area around each patient's bed. We also had to clean and sterilise the bedpans. The most exciting change in my early days was the arrival of disposable equipment. Up to then, each syringe, tube and needle had to be cleaned and sterilised by the nurse. They all had to be scrubbed and soaked in different solutions and then put into an autoclave, which steamed them at a high temperature to kill off any germs. The other big thing was the introduction of dialysis machines for kidney patients. In the early days, they were big, bulky and often did not prolong the lives of the patients for long, but before then they had no hope. The role of the nurse was more personal in the Sixties. Patients stayed in hospital for longer, so there was much more chance to build a relationship with them. I became a midwife and would see women all the way through their pregnancy and labour. The days were long, about nine hours. When I married in 1. I asked to go part- time - previously, I would have had to leave nursing, but that changed in the Fifties - and was put on to a 4. I left nursing when I had my family, but in 1. I got a job in an HIV sexual health centre. Nursing is still the most terrific profession because there is never a dull moment. Bridget Ryan: 'Anyone who broke the rules got a talking to'BRIDGET RYAN is a specialist nurse from Brentford, Middlesex, began her training in 1. St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Now 5. 4, she is married with two daughters and says: My teenage years were influenced by the Sixties and free expression. But nurse training brought that to an end. I was inspired by my grandmother, who was a nurse in World War I. All my fellow trainees were middle- class girls. We felt privileged to have a place at a London teaching hospital. Nursing was something to aspire to, which would make our parents proud. We had to wear starched dresses, aprons and frilly hats.

People who get their calcium from yogurt rather than from other sources may lose more weight around their midsection, according to a recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity. The probiotic bacteria in most yogurts help keep your digestive system healthy, which translates into a lower incidence of gas, bloating, and constipation, which can keep your tummy looking flat. This causes a kind of carb overload, and your body releases huge amounts of insulin, to combat the overload. Eat these in moderation. Complex carbs, on the other hand, are slowly digested and absorbed by the body because they have at least three sugar molecules. They include whole- grain flour, hearty vegetables, oats, and unprocessed grains, like brown rice. These foods are usually higher in vitamins and other nutrients that are beneficial for the body, and they are higher in fiber (which keeps your digestive system running smoothly). Some people prefer to embark on a diet that has a structure and rules to follow. If this is your thing then pick one you can stick too and remember to think about how you’re going to keep the weight off once the diet ends. There are lots of opinions about dieting such as low carbohydrate, low fat or simply reducing your portion sizes. Cook food from scratch. Try cooking from scratch, as this is the easiest way to control what goes into the food you eat. You don’t need to be the best cook, keep it simple and try cooking a little extra for the following day to save time. Dish ideas can include. Increase intake of protein and fibre. Increase your intake of protein and fibre to help keep you full. Include a serving of protein with each meal and if you’re eating carbohydrates then opt for high- fibre, unprocessed varieties such as quinoa, brown rice or buckwheat noodles.! A glass of wine (1. The reality is that most of us enjoy the odd drink so try and save for the weekend. It has also been shown that people who eat mindfully eat fewer calories. The concept is less to do with calories and more about being fully aware of what and why you. A good example is if you’re going to have a sweet treat. Add proteins such as lean poultry, tofu or pulses to increase their filling effect. Check food labels and look out for hidden sugars that appear under other names in the ingredient list such as corn sugar, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup, agave syrup, molasses or sucrose. If you’re including carbohydrates in your diet then opt for small servings of high- fibre, unprocessed varieties such as quinoa, brown rice or buckwheat noodles. Cutting out sugar is tough and going cold turkey may not be the best idea, especially if you currently eat lots of it. Reducing your carbohydrate intake can help with weight loss but if cutting them out completely is not how you prefer to eat, as advocated by some diets, then try cutting down by adding a handful of cooked quinoa, brown rice, sweet potato, spelt or pulses to stir- fries, soups, salads and stews, serving as one- pot dishes. Only snack if you need to. Many dietary regimes advocate a number of meals and snacks throughout the day. Snacking is great to avoid hunger pangs but if you’re not hungry then leave them out as it’s just another opportunity to overeat. If you can, then try and opt for nutritious snacks over shop- bought, low calorie items that often offer a short- lived satiety with little nutrition. If you need to include snacks then keep something healthy to hand. Healthy snack ideas include: Boiled eggs. Dips with chopped veggies. Tomato, stock or miso- based soups. Small handful of nuts, seeds or dried fruits. Low fat natural yoghurt topped with berries. Lean sliced poultry such as turkey. Canned tuna with a handful of pulses or salad. Factor in portion sizes. Switch to using a smaller plate or bowls to serve your food. Research shows that opting for smaller serving plates can lead to significant weight losses (5). Choose eggs for breakfast. Research shows that opting for eggs leads to greater satiety than grain- based breakfasts, making you less likely to reach for snacks mid- morning (6). If you don’t eat eggs then try another protein- rich breakfast such as smoked salmon, scrambled tofu or yoghurt with seeds and nuts. The supermarkets are filled with . Although these foods offer a good source of nutrients, they also add calories and are of no additional benefit to you if you’re diet is already packed with other healthy nutritious foods. Don’t fear fats! Fat doesn’t necessarily make you fat and although higher in calories than protein or carbohydrates, eating too much of any food will promote weight gain. Certain diets favour fats and proteins over carbohydrates that can be difficult for some people to control in their diet. Choose small servings of healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocados and oils such as extra virgin olive and coconut. Try getting friends or family members involved. You could also get work colleagues involved in a weight loss challenge or sign up for a charity sport event so you have something to aim for. Don’t become a slave to the scales! Weigh yourself weekly or set yourself a goal such as getting back into a favourite pair of jeans or dress. Try not to get disheartened if it takes a little longer than you hoped and don’t beat yourself up over the odd relapse, just pick up where you left off the following day. Vary the food in your diet. Make sure your diet contains a variety of foods. Eating fewer calories can make it even more difficult to glean all the nutrients you need. Include foods such as pulses, oily fish, nuts, seeds, lean proteins, plenty of vegetables and wholegrains (if including carbohydrates). You may want to consider a multivitamin and mineral supplement whilst dieting as a back- up such as Healthspan, Multivitality Gold, . Develop strategies for social events. Your nine month old's development. What can my baby do this month? Playtime with your baby is becoming more fun. She will love to empty and fill containers, or stack cups and rings. At this age you and your partner will be her best playmates. She’ll probably be exploring more than just her own toys, and you may find yourself using the word “no” more often. She probably picks up more from your tone of voice than understanding the words you use, though. Childproofing your home will help to keep her out of harm’s way while she’s discovering the world around her. In fact, with a few slight modifications, it becomes extremely effective weight loss advice. Check out my version. When will my baby start walking? Your baby is getting closer to walking, but most babies don’t take their first steps until their first birthday. You may notice your baby cruising, which is where she pulls herself upright and then moves around while holding on to furniture. A few nine month olds may take a few steps. Is your child is one of these, she'll need support from you. Your baby is also learning how to bend her knees, and how to sit after standing, which is harder to master than you may think! You can help your baby by standing or kneeling in front of her, holding both her hands, and walking her towards you. You could also buy a push- along toy, which your baby can hold on to as she walks. Look for toddle toys that are stable and have a wide base for support. One good place to start is to put latches on the doors of cupboards. Whether it’s fragile or treasured possessions you’re protecting, or cleaning products that you’re keeping off limits, it’s best to securely store them out of harm’s way. Your baby won’t understand some items are off limits, so removing temptation is better at this age. Should I buy my baby a pair of proper shoes? If your baby is standing and cruising, you may wonder if she needs a pair of shoes now. Until your baby is walking around on her own and going outdoors regularly, she won’t need to wear shoes (NHS 2. Your baby’s feet grow very quickly and if her toes are cramped by tight shoes or socks, they can’t straighten out and grow as they should (NHS 2. Let your baby go barefoot around the house. Going barefoot helps strengthen the arches of her feet and her leg muscles. It can also make it easier for your baby to balance when she can feel the different textures she’s walking on with her feet. What games will my baby enjoy? Your baby will enjoy putting objects in a container and removing them. Give her a plastic bucket and some large colourful blocks so she can practise this new skill. She will also like toys with moving parts, such as wheels, levers, or doors that open and close. Big plastic cars that your baby can roll around on the floor are fun toys for both boys and girls. Your baby may also initiate passing games, by giving you toys and then taking them back (NHS 2. Sheridan 2. 00. 8). Join in the fun by rolling a ball to your baby when you’re playing on the floor and seeing if she rolls it back to you. Give her a sorting toy or stacking rings and see if she sorts, stacks, or hands the pieces to you. Bathtime is another great opportunity for some fun. Your baby will probably love playing with bubbles and filling little cups with water. It won’t be long before she discovers the trick of emptying the cups over the side of the bath. Try giving her a kitchen sieve to fill with water. She’ll love watching the water flow back into the bath. My baby gets very distressed around other people. How can I help her adjust? Although it’s normal for your baby to show an extreme attachment by clinging to you and hiding from others, it can be difficult for doting grandparents and care- givers who want to show your baby some affection (Sheridan 2. Let your friends and family know it’s a good idea to let your baby make the first move. It’s a good idea that your baby regularly spends time with different people, while she is with you, to help prepare her for time apart. Keeping your baby in a familiar environment while introducing new people may also help. How can I help my baby to understand and use words? The torrent of words your baby has been hearing since birth is beginning to work its magic. Your baby’s babbling is probably starting to sound more like real words now, including mama and dada (ICAN 2. Sheridan 2. 00. 8). If your baby uses a dummy to soothe herself, that’s fine. But try to keep her dummy for settling times only, so that it doesn’t affect your baby’s babbling and learning to talk (NLT 2. Talking Point n. da.). Read more about the pros and cons of dummies. At this stage your baby still understands more from your tone than from your actual words. Obesidat is the best Ayurvedic and natural Weight Loss medicine in India. If you have a pushchair that has your baby facing you, talk to her as you walk, pointing out anything of interest as you go. Around now, your baby begins to understand the word “no”, but she may not do what she’s told just yet (ICAN 2. However, she will respond to her name by looking around, or by stopping what she’s doing to see who called (ICAN 2. Sheridan 2. 00. 8). Is my baby developing normally? Each baby is unique. Your baby will meet physical milestones at her own pace. These are simply guidelines to what your baby has the potential to accomplish, if not right now, then soon. If your baby was born prematurely (before 3. That’s why most babies born prematurely are given two ages by their doctors: Chronological age, which is calculated from your baby’s date of birth. Subsequently. we reported that 7 different protein sources were effective in stimulating an increase in circulating insulin concentrations. These highly significant insulin responses to different proteins resulted in either no change or a modest decrease in glucose. This suggested that an increase in protein content in the diet—particularly if associated with a decrease in. Such a diet could be useful for controlling. The present data indicate. This time frame was chosen because it represents the time required for glycated. In addition, with the method used to measure total glycated hemoglobin, each 1% represents . The order in which the diets was given did not significantly. Weight stability also was excellent (Figure 1. We considered this a critical aspect of the study design because our primary goal was to determine the effect of the diet. Blood pressure also remained stable throughout the study. On the basis of weight stability and dietary compliance. However, at the beginning of the first 5- wk study period, the glucose. L, which is lower than ideal for a study designed to show a decrease in glucose concentration. The reason for the lower concentration is unknown; there was no change in body weight. However, we suspect that subtle. These changes indicate the need for all studies in which the subjects have diabetes to be carefully controlled and not. The change in fasting glucose also represents a potential limitation in interpretation. This was most apparent. The net result was a. Figure. 2. This indicates. Staub- Traugott phenomenon (2. Lower midday glucose concentrations also have been observed when persons were fasting (2. Gout Symptoms, Treatment and Recommended Diet. Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by painful, stiff and inflamed joints. The stiffness and swelling are a result of excess uric acid forming crystals in your joints, and the pain associated with this disease is caused by your body's inflammatory response to the crystals. According to the American College of Rheumatology in 2. Now, 1 out of 4. 0 people in the U. K. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that gout is rare as an underlying cause of death,4 this does not mean you should take it lightly. Gout attacks or “flare- ups” can be extremely painful. However, prescription drugs, such as non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are the norm when it comes to treating gout, have been proven to do you more harm than good. Not only are these methods less expensive compared to buying prescription drugs, but they also pose less health risks. Vitamin - Wikipedia. A vitamin is an organic compound and a vital nutrient that an organism requires in limited amounts. An organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when the organism cannot synthesize the compound in sufficient quantities, and it must be obtained through the diet; thus, the term vitamin is conditional upon the circumstances and the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid (one form of vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animal organisms. Supplementation is important for the treatment of certain health problems. Vitamins are classified by their biological and chemical activity, not their structure. Thus, each vitamin refers to a number of vitamer compounds that all show the biological activity associated with a particular vitamin. Such a set of chemicals is grouped under an alphabetized vitamin . Vitamers by definition are convertible to the active form of the vitamin in the body, and are sometimes inter- convertible to one another, as well. Vitamins have diverse biochemical functions. Some, such as vitamin D, have hormone- like functions as regulators of mineral metabolism, or regulators of cell and tissue growth and differentiation (such as some forms of vitamin A). Others function as antioxidants (e. E and sometimes vitamin C). In this role, vitamins may be tightly bound to enzymes as part of prosthetic groups: For example, biotin is part of enzymes involved in making fatty acids. They may also be less tightly bound to enzyme catalysts as coenzymes, detachable molecules that function to carry chemical groups or electrons between molecules. For example, folic acid may carry methyl, formyl, and methylene groups in the cell. Although these roles in assisting enzyme- substrate reactions are vitamins' best- known function, the other vitamin functions are equally important. However, vitamins have been produced as commodity chemicals and made widely available as inexpensive semisynthetic and synthetic- source multivitamin dietary and food supplements and additives, since the middle of the 2. Study of structural activity, function and their role in maintaining health is called vitaminology. Using the genetic blueprint inherited from its parents, a fetus begins to develop from the nutrients it absorbs. It requires certain vitamins and minerals to be present at certain times. These nutrients facilitate the chemical reactions that produce among other things, skin, bone, and muscle. If there is serious deficiency in one or more of these nutrients, a child may develop a deficiency disease. Even minor deficiencies may cause permanent damage. For example, microorganisms in the intestine . Humans can produce some vitamins from precursors they consume. Examples include vitamin A, produced from beta carotene, and niacin, from the amino acidtryptophan. Most vitamins that are sold as food supplements cannot exceed a maximum daily dosage. Vitamin products above these legal limits are not considered food supplements and must be registered as prescription or non- prescription (over- the- counter drugs) due to their potential side effects. As a result, most of the fat- soluble vitamins (such as the vitamins A, D, E, and K) that contain amounts above the daily allowance are drug products. The daily dosage of a vitamin supplement for example cannot exceed 3. A, this limit is even lower (2. Such regulations are applicable in most European countries. Scientific evidence supports the benefits of dietary supplements for persons with certain health conditions. The effect of cutting vegetables can be seen from exposure to air and light. Water- soluble vitamins such as B and C seep into the water when a vegetable is boiled. The body's stores for different vitamins vary widely; vitamins A, D, and B1. However, vitamin B3 (niacin and niacinamide) is not stored in significant amounts, so stores may last only a couple of weeks. A primary deficiency occurs when an organism does not get enough of the vitamin in its food. A secondary deficiency may be due to an underlying disorder that prevents or limits the absorption or use of the vitamin, due to a . In contrast, restrictive diets have the potential to cause prolonged vitamin deficits, which may result in often painful and potentially deadly diseases. Well- known human vitamin deficiencies involve thiamine (beriberi), niacin (pellagra). The likelihood of consuming too much of any vitamin from food is remote, but overdosing (vitamin poisoning) from vitamin supplementation does occur. At high enough dosages, some vitamins cause side- effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. The doses of vitamins differ because individual tolerances can vary widely and appear to be related to age and state of health. In 2. 00. 8, overdose exposure to all formulations of vitamins and multivitamin- mineral formulations was reported by 6. American Association of Poison Control Centers (nearly 8. In humans there are 1. A, D, E, and K) and 9 water- soluble (8 B vitamins and vitamin C). Water- soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water and, in general, are readily excreted from the body, to the degree that urinary output is a strong predictor of vitamin consumption. Because they are more likely to accumulate in the body, they are more likely to lead to hypervitaminosis than are water- soluble vitamins. Fat- soluble vitamin regulation is of particular significance in cystic fibrosis. The ancient Egyptians knew that feeding liver to a person may help with night blindness, an illness now known to be caused by a vitamin A deficiency. This led to the nickname limey for British sailors. Lind's discovery, however, was not widely accepted by individuals in the Royal Navy's Arctic expeditions in the 1. In the early 2. 0th century, when Robert Falcon Scott made his two expeditions to the Antarctic, the prevailing medical theory at the time was that scurvy was caused by . Lipid from fish oil was used to cure rickets in rats, and the fat- soluble nutrient was called . The mice that received only the individual constituents died, while the mice fed by milk itself developed normally. He made a conclusion that . In 1. 88. 4, Takaki Kanehiro, a British trained medical doctor of the Imperial Japanese Navy, observed that beriberi was endemic among low- ranking crew who often ate nothing but rice, but not among officers who consumed a Western- style diet. With the support of the Japanese navy, he experimented using crews of two battleships; one crew was fed only white rice, while the other was fed a diet of meat, fish, barley, rice, and beans. The group that ate only white rice documented 1. This convinced Takaki and the Japanese Navy that diet was the cause of beriberi, but they mistakenly believed that sufficient amounts of protein prevented it. He published this discovery in a Japanese scientific journal. In 1. 91. 2 Polish- born biochemist Casimir Funk, working in London, isolated the same complex of micronutrients and proposed the complex be named . It was later to be known as vitamin B3 (niacin), though he described it as . Funk proposed the hypothesis that other diseases, such as rickets, pellagra, coeliac disease, and scurvy could also be cured by vitamins. Max Nierenstein a friend and reader of Biochemistry at Bristol University reportedly suggested the . In 1. 92. 0, Jack Cecil Drummond proposed that the final . Karrer and Norman Haworth confirmed Albert Szent- Gy. For their investigations on carotenoids, flavins and vitamins A and B2, they both received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1. In 1. 94. 3, Edward Adelbert Doisy and Henrik Dam were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of vitamin K and its chemical structure. In 1. 96. 7, George Wald was awarded the Nobel Prize (along with Ragnar Granit and Haldan Keffer Hartline) for his discovery that vitamin A could participate directly in a physiological process. The name is from vital and amine, meaning amine of life, because it was suggested in 1. This was true of thiamine, but after it was found that other such micronutrients were not amines the word was shortened to vitamin in English. Society and culture. They promoted foods such as yeast cakes, a source of B vitamins, on the basis of scientifically- determined nutritional value, rather than taste or appearance. Yoder is credited with first using the term vitamania, in 1. The continuing preoccupation with a healthy lifestyle has led to an obsessive consumption of additives the beneficial effects of which are questionable. As a result, the manufacturer, and not the government, has the responsibility of ensuring that its dietary supplement products are safe before they are marketed. Regulation of supplements varies widely by country. In the United States, a dietary supplement is defined under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1. Even though product registration is not required, these regulations mandate production and quality control standards (including testing for identity, purity and adulterations) for dietary supplements. In the United States, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) sets standards for the most commonly used vitamins and preparations thereof. Likewise, monographs of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) regulate aspects of identity and purity for vitamins on the European market. The reason that the set of vitamins skips directly from E to K is that the vitamins corresponding to letters F. The 3 day diet is a low calorie diet, and you can expect weight loss due to the sudden drop in calories. The problem is only that the calories on the 3 day diet are below 1. Your body thinks that it hit an emergency situation, and adjusts (to ensure your survival) by reducing the amount of calories it burns. The 3 day diet plan can be cycled as long as you incorporate an adjustment phase, which is 4- 5 days of “regular” eating. In other words, you can repeat the 3 day diet plan continuously so long as you eat normally for 4 to 5 days after each 3- day cycle. Many people are successful in losing weight on the 3 day diet plan. What is critical (if you want to keep the pounds off), is to slowly come back to normal eating after the 3 days, otherwise you will be at high risk of gaining it back quickly and then some! In a nutshell, if you want to lose up to 1. If you want to keep the lost weight off, you need to carefully plan the return to your normal eating pattern. Should I Exercise on the 3- Day Diet? With such low calorie intake (below 1. However, if you have the energy, and/or want to exercise, exercise will not only help you to lose weight faster, but it may also reduce your appetite, making it easier to be on this diet. Based on a study (links below) by Dr. Stensel of the Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, aerobic exercises (walking, running) are better at suppressing appetite than non- aerobic (muscle) exercises. You could incorporate a simple walking exercise on a daily basis. If the weather in your area permits, you can also take a nice walk every day. The exercise may reduce your appetite and make this diet easier. Now, once you are off the 3 day diet, exercise will become critical. If after a period of significant calorie reduction, you all of a sudden eat “normal” again, and maybe even eat MORE to fulfill your cravings, you will need to increase your exercise level to ensure that you can keep all or most of the weight loss. References: Exercise suppresses appetite by affecting appetite hormones, American Physiological Society, 2. Exercise Suppresses Appetite By Affecting Appetite Hormones, Science Daily How to Decrease Your Appetite While on the 3 Day Diet. Feeling hungry or having an appetite is not just a physical phenomenon, it is also psychological. We eat because we are stressed, bored, or because it is “time” to eat. Here are a few tips to decrease your appetite naturally. This can be especially helpful during the 3 day diet as you only eat a limited amount of food, but these are also good weight loss tips outside the 3 day diet. Drink water. Hunger and thirst are not that easy to distinguish. Low level thirst often feels like hunger. Drinking enough water throughout the day and before meals helps to ensure that what you are feeling is truly hunger, so that you don’t waste calories by eating, when water would have quenched your hunger! Drinking water should help to manage your hunger feelings while on the 3 day diet. There also has been research showing that water consumption increases the rate at which people burn calories. According to Mayo Clinic, you should be drinking at least eight 8- ounce glasses of fluid a day. On a side note, there also has been research showing that drinking lime/lemon water is particularly helpful to lose weight. So if don’t mind the taste, lemon water may be the best water to drink. Get enough sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you will tend to eat more, need more food to be not hungry and have a greater appetite, because your body hormones go into a direction that encourages weight gain. This short video (1 min) explains the importance of sleep for weight loss. But there is more to sleep, according to Psychology Today. According to Psychology Today, you burn more calories sleeping than just lying down in bed during particular phases of your sleep. The most calorie intense part of your sleep is the REM phase when your body burns a lot of calories. Unfortunately a big part of your REM occurs between the 6th hour and 8th hour of your sleep. So, if you miss those 2 hours, you will burn a lot less calories during your sleep. Combining the 3 day diet with sleep for at least 8 hours a day ensures that you get the most weight loss, and that during the day your hormones don’t make you hungry. Read more about how sleep affects weight loss. Add more fiber to your diet. Psyllium Husk is a natural product and is an effective fiber supplement. When combined with water, it swells up to 1. There has been some research that if Psyllium is taken before meals (recommended is 3. In addition to reducing appetite, Pysllium is also a good colon cleanser, providing detoxification and bowel regularity. Drinking it can be a little complicated initially, and you can choke on it if not done correctly. This short video (2 min) explains how to drink it safely. Eat Slowly. Most of us have developed an unhealthy eating habit of chewing and eating minimally and fast. Take time to savor every bite, chew extensively and take breaks while eating. Drink a lot of water with your meals. The reason for eating slowly is that it takes about 2. On the 3 day diet you won’t be eating enough to be really full, but if you take your time and eat extra slow, it will reduce your feelings of hunger and increase your feelings of satiety. According to the diet guidelines, this diet should be followed to the last detail, however the following items can be exchanged if necessary. Just make sure you eat nutritious and balanced foods for the 4 days when you are not on the diet. What about those 4 days when I am not dieting? The biggest obstacle to maintaining the weight loss from the 3 day diet are the days following the 3 day diet. Many people over- eat on the subsequent days, and gain everything back. The trick is to eat normally on those 4 days, but in moderation. Make sure to check how many calories you need per day to maintain your weight and stay within those calories. How Does the 3 Day Diet Plan Work? The supposed secret behind this diet is the boosted fat burning and a unique metabolic reaction that is created by the combination of foods this plan suggests. Supposedly, this is how the 3 day diet plan food combinations help burn fat, cleanse the body, increase energy and lower cholesterol. However, in reality, the fact that the 3 day diet plan is very low in calories is probably the main reason that weight loss is achieved. As the name of this diet suggests, the 3 day diet plan has to be followed for 3 days, but can be resumed an indefinite number of times after taking a 4 to 5 days break of “normal eating”. The reason this diet recommends to resume the usual eating style is to prevent the metabolism from slowing down and reverting to starvation mode, which can lead to fat getting stored in the body and promoting weight gain. Caution. This diet is really hard, since basically you will be half starving yourself for 3 days. If you feel sick or dizzy, immediately stop the diet and take in more calories (in moderation). If you succeed with the diet, there is a very high risk of rebound weight gain for most people. Physically and mentally you will probably be craving LOTS of food. Mostly likely, unhealthy food. On the first day after you finish the diet (which is the 4th day), satisfy your craving for food by eating a good volume of vegetables and meat, with limited carbs. Do NOT go out and have a large burger with fries, etc. If you have cravings for high- volume food, choose meat and vegetables, not carbs. When you go on such a restrictive diet, there is a risk of psychological longing for unhealthy foods. You may “dream” about all the pizzas, burgers, cakes, and cookies you will eat once the diet is over. This psychological longing often results in your consuming those fattening foods in higher volumes after the diet than before you went on the diet. Especially after the diet, be diligent about keeping the portions of those fattening foods small. If you can’t stop eating them, eat them in small portions spread out over the week. After The 3 Day Diet. You should have a plan in place for maintaining your weight after the 3 day diet. If you go back to your old ways, you may gain the weight back. For some people, the 3 day diet may be a “kick- start” diet after which they plan to go on a more sustainable long- term diet.
